The Trackrock Hammer-In is a semi annual gathering of knife makers, leather craftsmen, knife collectors, and knife enthusiasts that happens every spring and autumn at the Trackrock Campground, just outside of Blairsville Georgia. It is an event that will have appeal for all who are interested in knives, knife making, forging, hawks, leather crafts, knife collecting or trading, and hanging out with other folks who have those same interests.
The Trackrock Campground, situated in a picturesque rustic setting in the beautiful mountains of North Georgia, is a perfect setting for an event that in many ways is much like taking journey back in time. The accommodations include campsites and cabins which are surrounded by 250 acres of hay fields, meadows and woodlands. It is a designated Appalachian Botanical Sanctuary, a peaceful place which bordered on three sides by the Chattahoochee National Forest.
At the Hammer-in you can meet with, talk to, and learn from some very talented blade smiths and master leather craftsmen. You can watch as discarded steel is re-purposed and given new life. You will see, and with the hammers striking anvils you will certainly hear them as well, highly skilled craftsmen transforming scrap metals into useful blades, tools, and accent pieces. You will see those combined with wood, bone, and leather making beautiful and highly functional works of art.
As mentioned above, there will be a good many professional and apprentice blade smiths in attendance, and many blade enthusiasts there as well. So there will be a wide variety of cutting tools, in many styles, shapes, and sizes to be seen there, that are hand made by craftsmen from all over the country. There is always a custom knife being raffled too, with proceeds going to benefit a worthy charity. At the recent autumn event, the proceeds were donated to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital.
The hammer-in is a child-friendly event, with fun for the whole family. Along with having the chance to watch craftsmen at work, and the opportunity to learn some of the skills of trade from some very talented artisans, there will also be other events and demonstrations. One such event is the rope cutting tests, where knives are tested in the cutting of free-hanging 1-inch hemp rope. There will also be an opportunity to snag a valuable bit of plunder in the Iron-In-The -Hat raffle. On Saturdays there is usually an on-site catered BBQ. The pricing for the BBQ can vary, as per the needs of the caterer.
So whether you are a knife maker, a leather craftsman, a knife enthusiast, or are just interested in seeing these types of crafts and learning about them in real time, attending the Trackrock Hammer-In is a great way to spend a weekend.
